ONE of Australia's largest non-bank lenders has head-hunted former Newcastle Permanent chief executive Stephen Porges.

Mortgage broker Aussie announced yesterday it had appointed Mr Porges as its chief executive, effective from Monday.

Aussie founder and managing director John Symond said Mr Porges had an extremely strong background in institutional banking and "bread and butter" consumer products.

Mr Symond confirmed his company had head-hunted the former Wall Street investment banker.

"He brings a very strong track record of strategic business acumen to grow our business," he said.

Mr Symond said he would continue to be Aussie's executive chairman and the company's marketplace and industry spokesman.

Mr Porges told The Herald he was looking forward to his new role.

"John is a very positive person to work for, and Aussie is a very successful company, " he said.
