BEYOND OUR KEN

(M, 87mins) Roadshow

Whenever I hear the term "self-improvement" I hold on to my wallet, an ethnic trait that has frequently saved me from the likes of Ken and Jan Dyers' Kenja Communications. But sadly, for those who unlocked their bank accounts, the personal cost has far outweighed the joining fee. Like all gurus, Ken Dyers was accountable to no one - a charismatic, belligerent father-figure who manipulated his flock. Here, the focus is on the many accusations of child sexual abuse that were levelled against him by disillusioned devotees. The stunning climax in which Dyers spits the dummy in the face of intense pressure is a filmmaker's dream come true. Today Tonight must be green with envy.
